An Eye for and Eye

Speaker: Bill Santos

Music: Pam Lister

George Benjamin Clemenceau was a French statesman, physician and journalist. He served as the Prime Minister of France from 1906 -1909 and then again from 1917 -1920. For nearly the final year of WWI he led France and was one of the major voices behind the Treaty of Versailles. He was commonly nicknamed “le tigre” (the tiger) and “le Pere-la victoire” (father victory) for his determination as a wartime leader. One day on the way to a meeting with US President Woodrow Wilson’s adviser he was shot at by a young anarchist named Emile Cottin. As Clemenceaus's car sped away Cottin fired at least six more shots, one of which struck Clemenceau near his heart. Cottin was captured and the death penalty demanded, but Clemenceau asked for leniency, recommending eight years in prison "with intensive training in a shooting gallery."
