Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and the deterioration of bone tissue. One million four hundred thousand Canadians suffer from Osteoporosis; 1 in 4 women over the age of 50 has Osteoporosis and at least 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 has the disease. However, the disease can strike at any age. The cost of treating osteoporosis and the fractures it causes is extimated to be roughly $1.9 billion annually in Canada.
