At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the best dressed exhibition shows 250 years of style. It is claimed to be the most comprehensive costume exhibition ever mounted by the museum. On display are 200 costumes and accessories covering nearly 3 centuries of fashion. They will show costumes from the Middle East, Asia, as well as Europe and the United States. One of the most popular items in the collection is the wedding dress worn by Princess Grace, the former Grace Kelly of Philadelphia. Another item on display is a strapless, white, crepe, silk sheath. Diana, Princess of Whales, to benefit her favourite charities, auctioned it at Christies on June 25, 1997. For centuries, individuals or societies have used clothes and other body adornment as a form of non-verbal communication to indicate occupation, rank, gender, sexual availability, locality, class, wealth, and group affiliation. Fashion is said to be a form of free speech.
